Function of strain insulators

 

In transmission lines, corners experience significant tensile loads. To accommodate this substantial tension, strain polymer insulators are employed at sharp bends. In high-voltage transmission systems, these electrical insulators typically consist of a series of suspension insulators. Consequently, the Composite suspension insulator strings can be arranged in a horizontal plane, while the polymer strain insulators are positioned vertically. To manage high tensions effectively, multiple suspension strings-more than two-are connected in parallel. For lines operating at voltages below 11 kV, shackle insulators are utilized similarly to strain insulators. A tensile insulator is designed to withstand the tension exerted by overhead lines and is primarily used at line terminations and on towers where directional changes occur. In contrast, suspension insulators do not bear the line's tension; they only support its weight and are predominantly installed on straight-line towers. Insulators serve as devices that separate conductors with differing electrical potentials or isolate conductors from components grounded at zero potential. They must endure both voltage stress and mechanical forces and play a crucial role in overhead transmission systems. Initially, most insulation was applied to telephone poles; however, over time many disc-shaped insulators were suspended from one end of high-voltage wire connection towers to enhance creepage distance. These were commonly constructed from glass or ceramics and referred to simply as "insulators." It is imperative that these insulating devices remain functional under various electromechanical stresses resulting from fluctuations in environmental conditions and electrical loads; otherwise, their failure could compromise their effectiveness and adversely affect the operational lifespan of the entire system.
