To mitigate the impacts of corona, corona rings are typically installed on one or both ends of the insulator, attached to the end fittings. While corona rings are generally deemed necessary for system voltages of 230kV and above, there are instances where lower system voltages may necessitate their use for enhanced corona protection.

The corona ring is needed at the line end of the insulator, right at the end fitting and rubber interface, which is the area of highest electrical stress on the sheath of the insulator. As the application voltage increases, the diameter of the corona ring increases to effectively grade of the electric fields.

High voltages can lead to unwanted noise (RIV) and corona. In order to minimize the effects of corona, corona rings are applied to one or both ends of the insulator, attached onto the end fittings. Typically, for system voltages of 230kV and above, a corona ring or combination of rings is necessary. However, some applications may require rings at lower system voltages.
