Composite insulators have different end fittings depending on their usage characteristics. Most of the composite insulators used in domestic transmission lines adopt the "ball-socket" structure. In addition to meeting the tensile strength, requirements, and reliable connection with the mandrel, the design of the metal end also needs to meet the special requirements for applications under high voltage. Composite insulators are generally made into rods with small self-capacitance. Therefore, the voltage distribution on the surface of the insulator is very uneven. In this way, during normal operation, the electric star generated will cause harm, so voltage equalization measures need to be taken. In addition, the synthetic insulating material cannot withstand the arc of tens of thousand amperes of current, and it will cause damage to the wires and towers near the short-circuit fault. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt measures to strike the arc. At home and abroad, the method of installing a voltage equalizing ring is generally used to even out the electric field at the end, weaken the power, and divert the faulty circuit.


The grading ring of the composite insulator is an integral part of the composite insulator. Its function is to control the internal electric field intensity of the insulator, avoid internal partial discharge, reduce the external, especially the local electric field intensity on the surface of the metal connecting parts, reduce radio interference, and cause Start-up frequency arc, avoid burning the surface of the insulator, and minimize the local electric field intensity near the end surface to improve its anti-pollution flashover performance. Composite insulators are external insulation devices that need long-term operation, and the design requires that their service life is generally at least 30-50 years. In the long-term operation, the load form of the composite insulator changes, but the main base load is the tensile load. Therefore, the research on the long-term mechanical properties is mainly the research on the tensile properties. One of the biggest characteristics of the long-term tensile properties of composite insulators is that when the load exceeds the strength limit, the strength decreases with time, that is, it has the characteristics of strength creep. In order to ensure that the strength of the insulator after long-term operation can still meet the load requirements of the operating line, the creep characteristics of the insulator strength must be fully studied to ensure the long-term safe operation of the insulator.
