Feature

Composite insulators are used for insulation and suspension of conductors in high-voltage and ultra-high-voltage AC and DC transmission lines. In the early years, insulators were mostly used on utility poles (low voltage). Over time, they evolved to be used at one end of tall high-voltage transmission towers, where many disk-shaped or columnar insulators are hung to increase the creepage distance. These insulators are typically made of glass, ceramics, or silicone rubber and are referred to as insulators.

Electrical Value

Creepage Distance (Leakage Distance): The shortest distance along the surface of an insulator between two conductive parts.

Creeppage Ratio: The ratio of the creepage distance of the external insulation of electrical equipment to the highest voltage of the equipment or the system using the equipment.

Breakdown: A destructive discharge that penetrates the solid insulating material of an insulator, causing a permanent loss of insulation strength.

Flashover: A surface discharge that develops into a penetrating air breakdown is called a flashover. Surface discharge: A discharge phenomenon occurring at the interface between the insulator and the air.

Difference between Breakdown and Flashover: A discharge along the surface of an insulator is called a flashover. A discharge along the interior of the insulator is called a breakdown.

Steep Wave Impulse Withstand Voltage: The peak value of the impulse overvoltage that an insulator can withstand without breakdown under specified test conditions.
