Materials Commonly Used in Substation Polymer Insulators

Polymer insulators in substations are built from a combination of specialized materials, each chosen for its specific role in ensuring strength, electrical performance, and durability in outdoor conditions.

1. Core (Load-Bearing Member)

Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP):
The core is typically a solid rod made from epoxy resin–bonded glass fibers.
This material provides excellent tensile strength, low weight, and high electrical insulation-making it the backbone of the insulator.

2. Housing and Weather Sheds (External Insulation)

Silicone Rubber:
The most widely used material. It maintains hydrophobicity (repels water), resists UV radiation, and performs well in polluted or coastal environments.

3. End Fittings (Mechanical Connections)

Galvanized Steel, Aluminum, or Ductile Iron:
These metals are used to form the end fittings that connect the insulator to the conductor and the supporting structure.
They must combine mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and compatibility with the core bonding system.
