Selecting a polymer insulator with strong lightning resistance, superior pollution flashover performance, and long service life is essential to ensure the safe operation of transmission lines and a reliable power supply.

Composite insulators are composed of an epoxy glass fiber reinforced (E-glass) core rod and silicone rubber as the insulating housing. The epoxy glass fiber core rod offers mechanical strength approximately 1.6–2.0 times that of ordinary steel and 3–5 times that of high-strength porcelain. The three-layer silicone rubber sheds provide excellent resistance to pollution flashover and eliminate common issues associated with ceramic insulators, such as cracking, breakage, or glaze deterioration. In addition, the reduced diameter of the middle shed compared with the upper and lower sheds prevents the formation of a continuous conductive film, thereby minimizing leakage current heating and significantly lowering the risk of flashover.

In the event of a lightning strike on a pin-type composite insulator, the silicone rubber sheds remain intact and only exhibit visible burn marks, which can be easily identified during line inspections. Comprehensive electrical performance tests-including dry flashover, wet flashover, and power-frequency withstand voltage tests after prolonged water immersion-have all met applicable standards. Thermal shock testing was not conducted due to local ambient temperature conditions. The application of pin-type composite insulators is therefore an effective solution for reducing line faults and improving system reliability.
