Mozambique is working to make the most of its natural endowment in photovoltaic power generation to become the "champion" of electricity production and supply in Southern Africa in the renewable energy sector; Our goal is to play a leading role in transforming Mozambique into a regional power supply hub as an energy supply champion, President Filipe Nyusi has said.
The above remarks were delivered by the Mozambican Head of State at the inauguration ceremony of Provincia de Cabo Delgado, Ancuabe District, Northern Region of Mozambique, which is the largest photovoltaic power plant in Mozambique to date. Filipe Nyusi said the Metoro photovoltaic plant will increase the energy supply in Cape Delgado Province and help mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, and infrastructure in Mozambique will provide a power source through clean energy.
The Metoro photovoltaic plant, which began construction in 2020, consists of 125,000 Chinese-made photovoltaic panels with a capacity of 41 megawatts (MW), capable of producing 69 gigawatts per hour (6.9 million kW per hour) of electricity per year for the Mozambican (EDM) grid.
Through the combination of traditional energy sources such as hydro and thermal power with renewable energy sources, namely photovoltaics and wind power, Mozambique's power industry will reach new levels and become an important supply hub to meet the needs of the country and the southern region.
Mozambique plans to ramp up investment in renewable energy. The Mozambican government has launched a renewable energy auction programme to improve transparency in energy sales and reduce electricity prices. The construction of the project responds to the priorities of the Mozambican administration in expanding the social and economic infrastructure aimed at improving the living conditions of the population and promoting an enabling environment for productive activities.
