Dropout fuses are widely utilized in overhead distribution systems, particularly in rural and suburban areas where power lines are exposed to various environmental factors. They serve as a crucial component of the protective apparatus within electrical distribution networks, contributing significantly to the reliability and safety of the system.

The moving contacts at both ends of the fuse tube are secured by the fusible wire (fusible element). After the upper moving contact is pushed into the protruding part of the "duckbill," the upper stationary contact, made of phosphor bronze or similar material, presses against the upper moving contact, thus firmly locking the fuse tube into the "duckbill." When a short-circuit current passes through the fuse and melts, an electric arc is generated. The steel paper tube lining the fuse tube produces a large amount of gas under the action of the arc. Because the upper end of the fuse tube is sealed, the gas is ejected downwards, extinguishing the arc. As the fuse melts, the upper and lower moving contacts of the fuse tube lose the tension of the fusible wire. Under the weight of the fuse tube itself and the action of the spring plates of the upper and lower stationary contacts, the fuse tube quickly falls, breaking the circuit and disconnecting the faulty section of the line or the faulty equipment.

In real-world 10kV power line systems and distribution transformers, fuses often fail to operate correctly for several reasons. One is the poor skill and lack of responsibility of electricians, resulting in a lack of regular maintenance and repair of drop-out fuses. Another reason is the inferior quality of the drop-out fuses themselves, which cannot be easily opened and closed. These two factors diminish the functionality of drop-out fuses. In practice, it is common to encounter situations where the fuse tube or fuse element is missing, or where copper, aluminum, or even iron wire is used as a substitute. This leads to persistently high line tripping rates and distribution transformer failure rates.
