A surge arrester is an electrical device used to protect various equipment in power systems from overvoltage damage, providing excellent protective performance. The non-linear volt-ampere characteristics of zinc oxide varistors are highly effective, allowing only a few hundred microamps of current to pass under normal operating voltage. This enables a gapless design, offering good protection, lightweight, and compact size.

When overvoltage occurs, the current through the varistor increases rapidly, limiting the overvoltage amplitude and releasing the overvoltage energy. Afterward, the zinc oxide varistor returns to its high-resistance state, allowing the power system to operate normally.
