Porcelain is a ceramic material, and a high-quality ceramic is free of internal densities, holes, and cracks, with minimal thermal expansion. Porcelain is made from china clay, which is naturally available as aluminum silicate. A mixture of plastic kaolin, feldspar (a crystal stone of silica), and quartz (silicon dioxide, "SiO2") is heated in a kiln furnace at a controlled temperature to produce a smooth, tough, and shiny insulator without pores. A strong porcelain insulator has a dielectric strength of 60 kV/cm, a compressive strength of 70,000 kg/cm², and a tensile strength of about 500 kg/cm².
